Food and Beverage
It is used as a preservative in the manufacturing of processed foods. The natural antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of oregano make it an excellent natural agent for preserving processed food products particularly meat and meat-based products.
Food and Agricultural Immunology
It has shown very promising results in fighting stomach parasites of livestock when added to animal feed. Adding oregano to feed and oregano oil to the livestock’s drinking water consistently produces a healthier animal due to the reduction of stomach parasites improving the animal’s immune system. This is beneficial not only because of the quality of the animal product for consumption but due to the enabling of a reduction of antibiotic use by farmers on their livestock. It is common knowledge that antibiotic resistance can prove deadly not only for livestock but for humans too, therefore avoiding the use of antibiotics for livestock reduces the risk of microbial resistance worldwide
Cosmeceutical
Oregano oil is a common ingredient in many self-care products such as bio-active shampoos, body creams and lotions. It is often used in the manufacturing of perfumes due to its strong aroma.
Medicinal / Pharmaceutical Use
The oil itself, in its pure form has anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-septic qualities.
High cholesterol
Clinical research shows that taking oregano after each meal for 3 months can reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol and increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “good”) cholesterol in people with high cholesterol. However, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels are not affected.
Parasites in the intestines
Taking oil of oregano for 6 weeks can kill the parasites Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba hartmanni, and Endolimax nana. There is one human trial that occurred that has favourable results.
Antibiotic resistance in humans
There is a growing body of literature in the medical field that is researching the possible effects of essential oils, including oregano oil, as a bulwark against antibiotic resistance with promising results
Household Use
It can be used as a cleaning product due to its antiseptic properties. Much like eucalyptus oil.
